On Friday the 13th, Scappoose High School’s band attended the Worldstrides Heritage Festival in Seattle, Washington.

The senior band members pose with their awards from the festival.

The festival consisted of bands and choirs from multiple schools competing separately against one another. Scappoose’s Chamber Choir did not compete in the choir division,  but band competed against schools from Washington, Montana, Idaho and Canada in the band division. Each group performed in front of a group of adjudicators and was given feedback.

The band performed the same set of music they used when they qualified for the State Band Competition, which consisted of “The Fairest of the Fair”, “An American Elegy” and “Undertow.”

The marching band director from the University of Washington was the clinician for the band after their performance.

The adjudicator worked with us after our performance to improve our tone quality and breathing, affecting our sound in a positive way,” said band director Nicole Harris.

The following day, Saturday April 14th, the bands and choirs took a ferry to Tillicum Village, where they received awards.

‘Silver’ was the division specifically for the bands that competed. Scappoose received first in that division. Seniors Monroe Myers and Benjamin Warren were chosen by Harris to receive the award.

The final award was the ‘Outstanding Band Award,’ and was presented to Scappoose for placing the highest in the festival.

The Outstanding Band Award.

“We [had gotten] an award at the beginning, and then they gave out a ton of other awards for other schools, [and so] we were totally not expecting [to get this one,]” said senior Allison Vanderzanden.

When the band wasn’t preparing for the festival, they were touring Seattle. According to various band members they went to many places including the Space Needle, the Museum of Pop Culture, Pike Place Market and the original Starbucks.
