On April 21 votes were tallied at Prom, and it was announced that Senior Quinn Luna won Prom King.

Quinn has become the first transgender student at SHS to be crowned. “I came out to my mom sophomore year but I came out to friends before that. I still continue to come out to people to this day, but I’ve never gotten used to it,” he said.

Dance court members and winners have been more diverse this year than they have been in the past.

Students elected have come from different cliques in school, not just the “popular” crowd. Seniors Abby Martian and Kristina Barnes were both crowned at school dances this year and are part of the theater and drama department. Martian was crowned Queen at this year’s Homecoming dance and Barnes was crowned Queen at Winterball.

Quinn admits that a part of him thought he might be crowned. “I got on Prom Court without going around asking people to vote for me,” he said, “so there were people who would also vote for me for Prom King.” He also believes that being voted as King was a more “favorable” option because it is something that hasn’t happened until now.

Being announced as King was an emotional moment for Quinn. “When it was announced that I won, I cried, and it was hard to stop crying,” he said. Quinn’s recent crowning marks a change. He believes that his winning will help diversify the election of future court members in the years to come.
