Instagram, a social media platform used for many things, launched a standalone app for users in June 2018. IGTV allows individuals to upload self-created videos of what they desire. The new feature is described as ‘A Youtube Channel for Instagram’. Whether you have heard of the new addition to Instagram or not, you might be surprised with the effect it has had on local Scappoose High School  Junior, Rachel Lauridsen.

Over the summer, Lauridsen traveled to California to visit her cousin. Along the journey, she recognized her talent of singing.

Lauridsen has been singing for pleasure since she was young, whether it be with a familiar face or by herself.

“[Friends and family] always complimented my voice… but I never really thought I was good,” said Lauridsen.

It all started when Lauridsen’s cousin recorded a video of her singing and posted it to her IGTV channel, sparking the idea to create a channel of her own.

Lauridsen learned how to play the ukulele as the summer of 2018 began. With very little knowledge, she was able to teach herself how to play each chord. The ukulele accompanies her singing in a majority of her IGTV videos.

With an aesthetic background in place and her iPhone in front of her, Lauridsen’s voice smoothly dances around as the tune of ukulele trails along. Lauridsen continues to upload clips of her singing hit songs such as “Riptide” and “Ho Hey” on almost a weekly bases.

“To anyone that loves to sing and play instruments, just pour your heart out and don’t give a CRAP about what anyone says. If you enjoy what you’re doing then don’t give it up,” said Lauridsen.
