Coming off a tough loss to Wilsonville, the Indians were looking to avenge themselves against Wilson on Thursday. They did just that, coming out on top 49-21 against the Trojans.

“It got us back into the swing of things,” Indian wide receiver Mason Smiens said. “But it also let us work on places that we need to be better in if we want to make a run in the playoffs.”

The bounceback win comes at a good time for the Indians, as there is only one game left in the regular season. Going into the playoffs, they will look to continue the monstrous rushing attack, with running backs Matt Roth, Quincy Cleveland, and Connor McNabb. The trio rushed for 7 rushing touchdowns, 3 a piece for Cleveland and McNabb, and one for Roth. The rushing attack accounted for 418 of the Indian’s 512 total offensive yards, carrying them to victory.

“We ran the ball a lot better than last week,” said Cleveland. “The offensive line did a great job and gave us room to run all game.”

Another key component of the Indians success on the defensive side of the ball. They held Wilson to just two scores until a garbage time passing touchdown by quarterback Hunter Davis to give them 21.

“The blitzes were working all night. We were able to keep a lot of pressure on their quarterback. He was afraid, he started throwing the ball into the ground everytime we got to him. All around our defensive line destroyed,” said Scappoose lineman Slater Smiens.

The bounceback win puts the Indians at 5-2 overall this season, good enough for 5th in the state, and 2nd in league (Special District 1 West), which has 3 teams in the top 5 (Pendleton, Wilsonville, Scappoose). For Wilson, the loss puts them at 2-5, ranking a lowly 29th in the state, and tied for 5th in Special District 1 West.

Scappoose will face off against the Cleveland Warriors this Friday, in a game that will be vital for Scappoose playoff positioning, but not as vital for the 1-6 Warriors.

The top 6 teams from Special DIstrict 1 (East and West) will secure a playoff spot, and a win for the Indians Friday would secure that spot for them. Even with a loss, it is unlikely that they will miss the playoffs.

Going into the end of the year, the Indians will look to get more production out of their passing attack, led by quarterback Jakobi Kessi and receiver Gavin Larson, which accounted for just 96 yards against Wilson.

“We have most of the big areas of offense down, we just need to work on the little things like catching the ball and just running effective plays,” said Larson.
