The Scappoose girls soccer team has had a successful season thus far, and with just four games left, look to carry that success into a hopeful postseason run.

With lots of opportunities to showcase their skills this season, the Lady Indians have not disappointed. Their record is 7-4 overall, going 3-1 so far in league play, earning themselves the #6 spot in the current OSAA standings.

Lauren Whisenhunt and Payton Fisher, both four-year varsity players, have seen a lot over the years and can pick out good things when they see it.

“We are really good at working together and almost knowing what each other are going to do next. We try to control the tempo of the game and not let other teams get us away from what we want to do,” said Whisenhunt.

“We are really good at controlling the possession of the ball, we connect on a lot of our passes, and we have very good technical skills. Controlling the ball with good footwork and constantly looking for open teammates down the field are things we really emphasize,” said Fisher.

So far this season, the Indians have allowed the fewest goals in their league, scoring 34 goals to only allowing 12 scores. That is in large part due to the defense and junior goalie Faith Woodall, who took upon that new position this year with open arms.

“Our defense is the strongest I think it has been while I have been in high school,” said Woodall. “I really enjoy my new job. It is a lot more intimidating and scary, but I think it is a really good position for me and it helps our team as a whole.”

The team overall has a lot of experienced players, but four freshmen joined them this year. Tatum Boogman, Kiera Fagan, Sydney Hanke, and Bella Amaro have all impacted games this year and showed they were ready for the transition from middle school to high school.

“I have always looked up to them and to finally play with them is crazy. Their experience has made me a way better player and has been nothing but open to us joining them. They have made us a part of this team and we all just want to win. It has been a ton of fun,” said Boogman.

With 3 games remaining in the regular season, the team will look to win out and secure a top seed in the playoffs. The remaining games are against Rex Putnam, St. Helens (senior night), and La Salle Prep. None of those teams have been nearly as dominant or consistent as Scappoose this year. The next game will take place Wednesday against Rex Putnam.
