The Candle editorial policies pertain to all published material on The Candle website,, and all of its extensions, online or in print.


The Candle is the official student based media of news and information of Scappoose High School and surrounding areas which is published and produced by the students on The Candle staff. The Candle is established as a designated public forum by and for its student staff to inform and educate its readers on events of Scappoose High School and surrounding areas and for discussion of issues of concern to its audience. The electronic media (including online, podcast, multimedia, and social media) along with any of The Candles extensions are entailed to the same rights, freedoms and protections of any media produced for print publication or its various purposes. The Candle and its contents shall not, in any way, be restricted or reviewed, by school officials prior to publication or distribution.

The advisers of The Candle are encouraged to coach and discuss content during the writing process. Because school officials do not engage in prior review the content on The Candle and its extensions is determined by and the views of the student staff and does not reflect the views of school officials, the school district or the school itself. The student staff of The Candle take complete legal and financial liability for the content of the publication.

The Editors of The Candle shall review and enforce this policy.


Any and all comments posted on this website must have a valid name attached, no anonymous comments or fake names will be allowed. Comments have to be approved by The Candle staff and its editorial board before the public will be able to see said comments.


All photos posted on social media, a public forum or platform, in a public area, or in any public setting can be posted without the permission of the original owner or anyone present in the photo.


The Candle and its staff are protected by and bound to the principles of the First Amendment and other protections and limitations afforded by the Constitution and the various laws and court decisions implementing those principles. The Candle will not publish any material determined by student editors or the student editorial board to be unprotected, that is, material that is libelous, obscene, materially disruptive of the school process, an unwarranted invasion of privacy, a violation of copyright or a promotion of products or services unlawful (illegal) as to minors as defined by state or federal law. Letters to the editor, guest editorials or any submitted material must be signed. The Candle reserves the right to publish, not publish, edit content, and clarify all submitted material.


  1. The editorial board determines if a significant error is printed.
  2. The editorial board will determine the manner and timeliness of a correction. When a significant correction is made on an web article, the correction will be noted on the story along with the date and time of the correction.

  1. The adviser will not act as a censor or determine the content of the paper.
  2. School officials shall not fire or otherwise discipline advisers for content in student media that is determined and published by the student staff.
